XP problem. Can't access user accounts

I was downloading a Virus software. After the product finished updating
online my computer was restarting. As it was shutting down a MS box appeared
saying updating network. Then a windows info box popped up saying "this is
not a known MS banner". My son felt it was taking too long to restart so he
did a manual shut down by holding the start button in. There are multiple
accounts on the computer. Upon restart, when attempting to sign on to his
windows account the desktop came up with no icons, and shut down within 10
seconds going back to the main XP page with all user accounts listed. I tried
starting in SAFE MODE and the same thing happens. Also started with debug.
Nothing has helped. Need advice please!

What antivirus program did you install? I assume that's what you meant and
that you weren't knowingly installing a "Virus software".

You actually got an error message with the exact text "this is not a known
MS banner"?!! That's not a Windows error and unlikely to be anything from a
legitimate company either.

It will be impossible to untangle what you did in newsgroup postings. Either
take your computer to a competent local tech or back up your data (which
can be done even if you can't get into Windows) and wipe/clean-install
Windows. If you take the first choice, I don't recommend using a
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place.

It was Kaspersky internet security. I've loaded it in several other PCs and
had no issue. I tried admin in safe mode and it shuts down right down again.

Contact Kaspersky tech support for help with their product. Otherwise, see
if you can get into Safe Mode command prompt. If you can, run System
Restore to before you installed Kaspersky by typing the following at the
command prompt:

c:\Windows\System32\restore\rstrui.exe [enter]

Sorry, I work strictly in the Fresno-Clovis, CA area. However, I'm sure
there is a competent computer tech in NJ. A good shop will have rescue
systems that may allow them to fix the issue without booting into Windows.
This will not be a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place. Or you can
back up your data using a Linux Live CD and an external hard drive and then
clean-install Windows.
