My printer (epson styluc c44ux) has stopped working when I unplug it from the
usb port I get no sound. When I went to device manager I have nothing listed
it is completly blank. Both my flash drives work ok ? as do my mouse and
keyboard but my daughters ipod is seen as a drive but itunes dose not see it.
I have also noticed that my internet connection os slow between sites but is
ok once you are there.I have scanned for virus malaware etc. any advice would
be appreciated.

This issue showing up recently, seems to be caused by a Malware named
Apropos.C. It installs a Kernel driver with a random file name. More
information available at:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/spyware.apropos.c.html

Removal tool:

See if running the AproposFix tool below helps:
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,14679793

Thanks to McCarthy for supplying the above URL. Note that the utility
referenced above removes a Malware reponsible for blank device manager.

Other possibilities:

No Items Appear in the Device Manager List When You Open It
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;311504

Also read this,
"If Device Manager is showing nothing, then Its the plug and play service
that is the problem. But if the Device manager is showing the system_name
and not showing any devices in the window, then check the security
permissions on the Registry key HKLM\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\ENUM .The
SYSTEM account must have full control permissions on this key in order for
the Device manager to list all the devices in the window."

Thanks both of you for your replies

Ramesh
I have tried the appropos fix tool but no change. I have also checked the MS
311504 post and all appears ok. With regard to the registery enteries I am
not sure what I am looking at so cant confirm either way with out a bit more
help. Do you think that this is also responsible for my printer problems or
just coincidence. I am not at home tomorrow so may be a delay in responding
(in Lille France for day out)

Thanks for your help so far

Martin

Martin,

Both may be related. Run these malware cleaners:

1. Ad-Aware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com

2. SpyBot S&D
http://www.safer-networking.org

3. CWShredder
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

Update 1 & 2 before running a scan.

Then, run a full system virus scan with fully updated definitions. Try Trend
Micro's Sysclean package (free), it's capable of eliminating keyloggers,
trojans etc.

Hi again
I have 1 and 2 on pc anyway and wre updated they removed some problems. I
the loaded and ran cwshreader which came back clear. I then tried trend on
line scanner which removed another load of threats. I am at present running
sysclean as you requested but still have same problems.

Is it worth doing a repair of windows xp. trouble is I have an oem disk not
a clean copy of xp but could borrow one if you thought it might help. As a
last resort I can always reformat and reload from my disk but then I have to
restoreall the updates (sp2 etc) which is what I am trying to avoid

Martin,

Repair install using a base XP CD will undo the hotfixes and Service packs
installed. If you're wanting to do a repair, then use a slipstreamed XP CD
(SP2 integration) and then proceed with a repair.

Also read this,

I cant answer your 2nd option as I dont look at the registry so not sure
what I am looking at give me a bit more info please and ill look at it again.

On your first point if I do a repair with the disk I have to hand is it just
a case of going to windows up date or can i slipstream my oem disk and keep
my data intact or have we got to the stage when I should bite the bullit and
archive / reinstall.

I tried a system restore but still no change

Your opinion on my best option would be appreciated

If you do a repair using the base XP CD (without any SPs included), then
you'll need to re-apply all the hotfixes, Service Pack etc. Alternately,
create a slipstreamed XP CD with SP2 integration. BTW, repair install
preserves the existing user data.
