It used to be when I used notepad/wordpad when I selected something via
the mouse, dragging, it would auto-copy it to the replace text. This is
no longer working. Does anyone know how I can reenable this?

I don't think Notepad supports that option, but Wordpad does. See if this
command-line helps, from Run dialog:

regsvr32 ole32.dll

Restart Windows. If that does not help, try reinstalling Wordpad:

Type %Systemroot%\inf in Start, Run dialog. Right-click Wordpad.inf, and
choose Install.

Note that the file Wordpad.inf might show as Wordpad in Explorer, with the
"Hide extensions" option turned on. Insert your XP CD in the drive when
prompted for the system files, or point to %Systemroot%\ServicePackFiles
folder if you have applied a Service Pack (1 or 2) after installing Windows
XP.

BTW, %Systemroot% refers to your Windows folder.
