I have Windows XP. Recently I started using Notepad for
writing HTML files. I want line numbers in the files and
have been told that I can get line numbers through
the "View Menu", which has the item "Status Bar" in the
drop down menu. However, I cannot seem to get line
numbers because when I click on the "view" menu,
the "Status Bar" is grayed out so that I cannot access
it. What can I do to fix notepad so that the "Status
Bar" is solid black so that I can click on it? Anybody
have any ideas on this?

I think you have misinformed if you are talking about Notepad as
delivered in Windows XP.

The only line numbers visible in Notepad will be in the bottom left
corner of the screen.

Other more capable editors are available for purchase or free download.
I particularly like jedit which is very capable and free and provides
you some features which will help your editing of HTML files. Search
Google for where to get. You can surely find outhers.

Sorry I cant help you with your request but I only use
notepad because it keeps them simple and the smaller
your .html files are the faster they down load putting
line numbers in will just slow them down.

You can get that feature in the free EDITpad Lite - a well written, and
occasionally updated editor.
Read about it and download here...

Word Wrap must be turned off, in order to enable the Status bar in Notepad.

Doug,

Thanks! I never noticed that before. It does solve the
problem. The reason this is needed is that I am doing
some javascript programming in my html files, and the
debugger lists errors by line number. When you don't
have line numbers, that can be a bit frustrating!

And for the rest of you who gave suggested editors that
include line numbers, I will look into those as they
would be helpful for some other things I do. Thank you
for your suggestions which are much appreciated.
