notepad deleted

nortons deleted my notepad because it had a virus that it said it couldnt repair the file. is thier any way to reinstall notepad without doing a total reinstall of xp home?

This is a common virus that renames notepad.exe in your
....windows/system32 folder to something else and replaces it with a
bogus version of notepad.exe.

If all Norton did was delete the bogus version in the system32 folder,
you can probably find a good version (about 65kb) of notepad.exe is
also in your main "windows" folder... if it is there, copy it to the
system 32 folder and see if notepad now works...

That sounds like a great idea and should work. However, in my case all
instances of notepad.exe are deleted. Panda eliminated them when the virus
attacked. I have files that I need to access via Notepad and really need the
program. I installed SP2 from an update online also and so when WFP asks for
the SP2 CD, i of course have none. Does Microsoft offer a download of
Notepad anywhere?? This is pretty harsh and apparently near impossible to
replace. Restore will not undo the damage either.

Start> Run> MSCONFIG. You will find an "Expand" button in this tool. You
can use it in conjunction with the XP CD to expand a new copy of a single
file such as notepad.exe. This works with the retail CDs and the generic
OEM CD.

The XP CD does not list any files when I try to use the CD to "Expand". The
"List files of type" only gives the option of *.cab so I couldn't even browse
all files to check for it. Any idea what I may be doing wrong here?

Instead of trying to locate the file, type notepad.exe as the name of the
file. Select "i386" as the source folder and let XP do the work of
searching cabs for the file.

I tried your suggestion but XP does not do the work of searching the cabs
for the file. It still wants me to choose a file as the "Restore from"
choice. I have no idea which cab to choose to expand and would like to avoid
having to individually expand all of them.

Actually, it's not in a cab. It's in the top level of the i386 folder:
notepad.ex_ is the compressed form of notepad.exe

If you still have trouble with this, you could grab a copy notepad.exe from
a working computer.
