A virus can prevent regedit, msconfig and other programs from running.
Whether SFC could be affected, I don't know.

See if McAfee will do a boot scan. That might detect, and remove the
virus before it can take control.

Try this:

1. Click Start - All Programs - Accessores - right-click on Notepad and
choose Properties.
2. In the Properties dialog box, under Shortcuts tab, From the "Run" drop
down menu choose "Maximized". Apply the changes.
3. Open Notepad. See if it opens now in full Window.

Hope this help, let us know!

First Did you try to open it in Safe Mode?.
To eliminate any third-party software you may have blocking the Notepad from
opening try in Safe Mode.
Do you have a protection Software/files/folders like RECURE.EXE, XSofty..etc
installed.
Did you scanned for malwares (but I can't see if all else is okay or not?)
on your system?.

Also check that the Notepad is set as your Default Text Editor in Control
Panel >> Add/Remove then click Set Programs Access and Default and be sure is
set there and on the IE properties under Programs Tab.

If still then proceed with the next step:
= Open Windows Explorer then click Tools >> Folder Options and click on
Folder types.
Scroll down to [~] EXC Text Document File type and Highlight it and click
Advanced.
On Edit File Type be sure these entries there:

Did you try as I said. Because it could be possible that everything is fine
except your Notepad window has been moved in the corner of your screen and
you are unable to see it.

However, to boot Windows in Safe Mode, restart your Computer and after the
POST screen (first screen which has your hardware information or company
logo) repidly press F8 key to bring up the Advanced Option menu. Here press
enter on Safe Mode. Try opening Notepad files here as said by "Nass".

This is because it is not a shortcut. It is an original file. Cut and Paste
the file back to your Windows folder. Then right-click on the file and choose
Send To - Desktop (Create Shortcut). Move back to desktop and right-click on
the Notepad shortcut and choose Properties and check the things as I said in
my previous post. If that doesn't help then try running Windows in Safe Mode.

I would venture a SWAG that *nobody* replying in this thread would have

What else did you find hiding in the TV?

I would venture a SWAG that *nobody* replying in this thread would have
thought that you had *TWO* monitors and that one of them was turned off.
LOL

What else did you find hiding in the TV?

Glad you got it worked out.

thanks!!! i re-read your post, "it could be possible that everything is
fine except your Notepad window has been moved in the corner of your
screen and you are unable to see it." my t.v. is connected to my computer
and the t.v. was off. that's why i couldn't see it! thanks!

This is because it is not a shortcut. It is an original file. Cut and
Paste the file back to your Windows folder. Then right-click on the file
and choose Send To - Desktop (Create Shortcut). Move back to desktop and
right-click on the Notepad shortcut and choose Properties and check the
things as I said in my previous post. If that doesn't help then try
running Windows in Safe Mode.

perhaps i've done something unwise. and made matters worse.

i replaced the notepad in the system with one i found on a tech
website.

when i click properties there is no shortcut window. it says notepad
properties at the top. general tab. version tab (file5.1.2600.0),
compatability tab,summary tab

where can i get the notepad that was in my windows xp home edition?

:

Did you try as I said. Because it could be possible that everything
is fine except your Notepad window has been moved in the corner of
your screen and you are unable to see it.

However, to boot Windows in Safe Mode, restart your Computer and
after the POST screen (first screen which has your hardware
information or company logo) repidly press F8 key to bring up the
Advanced Option menu. Here press enter on Safe Mode. Try opening
Notepad files here as said by "Nass".

thanks for those that tried to help. still doesn't work. i can't
open my notepad documents. i have windows xp home edition. could
i have a virus? how can i check mcafee didn't detect. can i
delete notepad and reinstall?

First Did you try to open it in Safe Mode?.
To eliminate any third-party software you may have blocking the
Notepad from opening try in Safe Mode.
Do you have a protection Software/files/folders like RECURE.EXE,
XSofty..etc installed.
Did you scanned for malwares (but I can't see if all else is okay
or not?) on your system?.

Also check that the Notepad is set as your Default Text Editor in
Control Panel >> Add/Remove then click Set Programs Access and
Default and be sure is set there and on the IE properties under
Programs Tab.

If still then proceed with the next step:
= Open Windows Explorer then click Tools >> Folder Options and
click on Folder types.
Scroll down to [~] EXC Text Document File type and Highlight it
and click Advanced.
On Edit File Type be sure these entries there:

Be sure the setting implemented on all Text Document:
