Notebook cannot start due to error saying missing/corrupted file

I have a system startup issue on my Microsoft XP
Professional saying windows cannot start due to missing
or corrupt file: <windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

It also asked to re-install a copy of te above file.
Where can I find the file?

Please advice.
