Missing file

When "trying" to start my laptop, I get the following message..."Windows
cannot start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows
root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe...Please re-install a copy of the above file".
Can someone please direct me in the right direction to correct this problem?
Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Boot with the XP CD.
you will be prompted to Install or Repair, choose Repair.
Enter into the Recovery Console.Follow the prompts. When you get to the

C: or C:\Windows prompt, enter the following command:

EXPAND -R X:\I386\NTOSKRNL.EX_ C:\Windows\System32

This will extract a copy from the installation CD.

Does your OS open up in Safe Mode? If it does then open in Safe Mode and go to MSconfig\General\Expand File.

Put in your Installation CD and fill in File to Restore(ntoskrnl.exe) then Restore From (point to the CD) and then Save File in (C:\Windows\System32 )1st, and then again to (C:\Windows\System32\dllcache)2nd time. This file resides in these 2 locations. Since you do not know in which one it is missing then install in both locations.

Maybe someone has a better way to do this in XP.

Did you remove the SP back up Files by any chance
