not responding

HELP. I'm new to Windows XP so excuse my ignorance. I
purchased this computer on 11/11/03. Quite often when I
try to open a program I get a message telling me that the
program isn't responding. When I try to end task
everything disappears except for the cursor & wallpaper.
The only thing left for me to do is to switch off at the
wall to reboot. Surely this is not natural.
Anybody got any suggestions to whats wrong or how to
rectify problem?

Did it always do this? If so I would call the people you purchased it from.
If not try a system restore, back to a point when it wasn't doing it.
