word 2002 not responding

I have office XP. my word program has been running slow lately and has frozen
up a few times in the last couple of weeks. the other day while trying to
copy a
folder of word documents with graphics to a cd, word stoped responding, the
cd stoped responding, my task bar would not come up to access 'start', the
error message window appeared but i couldn't send the message because all the
icons on my desktop had disappeared! The error message wouldn't cancel. I did
get task manager up (C + A +D) but nothing would turn off. So I hit the power
button but the pc wouldn't turn off. It sat for 10 min on 'windows is
shutting down', so i hit the switch on the surge control. Waited a while and
turned it back on. booted up ok. tried to drag and drop the file. Same thing.
Drag froze. had to shut down the same way. and again.?????

1. Hold the power button down and count to 10, as in 1 Mississippi, 2
Mississippi, etc. Before you hit 5 it'll be off.

2. Try burning the data with CD-burning software. There's almost always some
sort installed on a systme with a burner.
