Not responding ......software

Not responding ......software

I have a laptop - Windows XP, Intel Celeron 350
256 MB SDRAM, 40GB HDD

My laptop is now giving me trouble. It says "Not responding" on my
Instant Messaging box, Browsers etc.

I do not know why this is happening.

I have run
-Msconfig and unchecked all the software in the Startup section.
-defrag
- Spybot
- Virus scan
- Adaware

but still it runs slow and says Not responding.

When I go to Windows Task manager, I see 260MB are being used. I do not
why so much MB is being used when i have only 3 or 4 browser windows
open...usually Mozilla. No other software.

Once I got a message that the Virtual memory was dangerously low.

Can any one pls help me ?

Thanks
Anna

Check which particular process(es) is / are using the bulk of the memory.
You can check that in Task Manager. You may have to change the columns you
display to show the peak memory / memory usage ones eg via the View menu.

Anna,
Lets see if we can get you a bit better off than you are now.
First thing I need to harp on is that you really don't have enoug
memory (ram) 256 is agequate to get the job done but you are draggin
the bottom of the net in doing so...especially with the faste
applications that are being used on the web and in other programs
This can cause you to be timed out and recieve that not respondin
message because it is just taking to long to access

Which brings me to another issue...you say you defraq but have yo
compressed that drive and cleaned out the cahe and temp files alon
with it. and what about a regestry cleaner. Just defragging is no
good enough. So I will lead you through some things step by step an
I need you to download a few free programs that will help you ou
here. these will compliment your other security and anti-virus
programs. Please google for these and download them and update the
and then run them

spywareblaster....this program actually protects you from over 500
bad guys and you never even know it is there. works well with spybo
s&d

Ccleaner (crap cleaner) this is also a anti-spyware and malwar
remover but also acts as a registry cleaner....a registry cleane
looks for and finds and removes or fixes what is refered to dea
paths....these are remnants of old files and programs that get lef
behind but are never removed and cause your system to really ru
slow. Don't be surpised...but I have seen systems with hundreds o
bad issues in the registry

After you download and run those I need you to navigate through you
computer and make a few adjustments

First lets compress those files and rid you of some old ones
start > programs > accessories > system tools > dis
clean-up and start the program....let it analyze and when the windo
pops up...place a tick in every box in that window and then go t
"more options " tab and choose to remove all the old syste
restore files except your last one then ok and let it do its thing

When it finishes right click on "my computer" icon an
select "explore
In the new window on the left click the "C local drive
line and then "windows" and scroll down till you get to th
"prefetch" folder. and open it. On the tool bar clic
"edit" and select "select all" then click on th
delete button to delete all the files in that folder. and then clos
out back to the desktop

Now google for UPHclean from microsoft and download it. This is
little program that cleans up user profiles that don't like to let g
when a program is finished. It kind of acts like a gatherer of los
memory and will run with no resources but will keep your memor
unattached and free to be used when you need it

Now defrag your system again and lets see what it can do....I will b
here for a while but don't take forever

I wouldn't wait too long. anna may also be not responding.
