Not Recognized as Administrator

I am using an Acer Aspire mini-notebook computer with Windows XP, SP3
installed. I am unable to install some programs because I am not recognized
as the Administrator. I am the only user of this computer. How do I change
this?

I tried "User Accounts" but all I get is a blank page and no way to change
anything.

I hope someone can help me with this because it's quite frustrating. Not
all of the features I like to use on my regular laptop are available since
I'm not the administrator of this one.

Thanks in advance.

Try this:
- Log on as yourself.
- Click Start, then Run
- Type the three letters cmd
- Click OK
- Type this command:
set user{Enter}
- Jot down your UserName.
- Reboot the machine into Safe Mode.
- Log on as administrator.
- Click Start, then Run
- Type the three letters cmd
- Click OK
- Type this command:
net localgroup administrators xxx /add{Enter}
(replace xxx with the UserName you jotted down before)
- Log off, then log on normally.
Your account has now administrative privileges.

Many components of WinXP are called "Services" each of which
can be turned on or off via / Administrative Tools. If you can load
these tools, look down the list for something likely that may have
turned off "User Accounts."

MVPs usually advise all users to have a Limited account for everyday
use and (at least) one Administrator account for repairs/maintenance.

Thank you. This seemed to work.
