Not possible to set D:\ as READ ONLY?

I'm doing some testing and I need to set the ROOT directory of my D:
drive (which is not my boot drive) to READ ONLY to prohibit wayward
applications from writing to it. So far, I see no way to do that.
Other directories have properties where I can set a read only flag,
but not the ROOT directory. And, I've found nothing in control panel
drive management or device manager properties that allow for this.

This is an important security feature that any OS should support, is
it not? I'm running XP Pro SP2. If XP can do this, does anyone know
how?

Actually, you can't do this in *any* folder. The read-only attribute doesn't
apply to folders.

Ah, another set of hidden properties that had to be excavated from the
convoluted Microsoft interface-- thanks for the help there. Turns out
the most important KB article in this case was actually this one:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307874/

It describes turning off "simple sharing," as otherwise you don't even
get the security tab in the folder properties where you can disable
the individual user permissions on the folder-- so I had no clue from
the folder properties that there was any way to adjust the permissions
whatsoever. You'd think they'd gray it out or something so at least
you'd know it's *possible* to control permissions under some
conditions-- I could have then asked, "how do you ungray the security
menu in the folders properties" and isolated the problem a little
better. As it is, I had no idea there was a securities tab in the
folder properties...
