cdroms won't read

I have 2 cd-roms. According to the device manager these are working properly.
No exclaimation marks.
1. D: drive is standard cd-rom drive/F5B. Put disk in and get flashing
red/green light.
2. E: drive is Cendyne_522452AX. Put disk in and get green light but no
loading.
3. Only E: drive will ONLY read my ATI utility disk. Both drives will not
read any other disk. XP disk, Office 2003, motherboard disks etc.
4. Uninstalled both through device manager. Add hardware. Both returned to
same condition.
5. Problems started same day as network connection problem. I fixed that.
6. Can't do XP repair with disk because cd-roms won't read.

Do the devices share the same IDE controller ? Is this a new condition
where in the past both devices worked ? Sometimes certain combination
of PATA devices on the same controller don't play well together. For a
proper enumeration of the opticals I would have uninstalled either the
Primary or Secondary controller that hosts the drives.

To me there is almost no reason to have multiple Optical drives in a PC.
A single DVD-RW meets almost all requirements and most burning apps
provide a copy disk feature. ( If that's needed ).

Yes, they are both on the same cable and worked okay until something
happened. I suspose I could unplug one of them and see what happens.
