Not connecting

Windows Mail is not connecting to download mail. I click Send/Receive, it
says "Authorizing", "Connected" and then immediately "Disconnected".
My internet connection is fine, and I've made no changes to windows mail.
I've tested sending an email, and that seems to work (it disappears from my
Outbox, at least). But nothing is received.
I know this is not because no one is sending me email, because I normally
get plenty of spam every day. I've received nothing for over 24 hours now.

Any ideas?

Can you send a mail to yourself?
Did you check out your account at https://web.orange.co.uk/r/login/
Is there any mail showing?
Check out the Junk folder, is that eating your mail?
Is your own address in your Blocked list on the server?
Add your address to the safe sender list.

Are you checking your mail from more than one PC/Laptop?

Thanks for the swift reply...

Well, I can apparently send mail (it disappears from the Outbox, as I said),
but it hasn't (yet) come back.

I just checked, and there is nothing there. Not even the test message I sent
to myself.
(I must admit I only ever go to the orange site to check my statement, and
not often even that.)

No. Junk folder is currently empty.
Is your own address in your Blocked list on the server?

How do I check this? Is that the Blocked Senders tab on the Junk Email
options? If so, there's only one address there, and it's not mine.
Add your address to the safe sender list.

Just done that, seems to make no difference.

I have another desktop PC (Win2K, Outlook express), tried that, same thing.
(They're networked, same internet connection.)

Jon, on the orange account page, left side, under the folders list, I see
Other Options and Services, below that I see 4 entries, one of them being
blocked senders.

I sent you a email, check the website. Is it there?

Do you have them both set to leave a copy on the server?

Hi
I'm having exactly the same problem. Just purchased new PC (desktop) and
cannot receive emails. I was previously using broadband modem with laptop and
now are using wifi. I am having to get my emails from my wifi laptop
connection which is working with no problems on outlook express. I'm using
windows mail on desktop - alos the laptop has XP and the desktop vista.
Any ideas - I've tried all the things you suggested Mac except I don't know
how to check if I have either PC checked for leaving copies on the server.

It's working again now (received emails beginning around 12.50 local time,
just after I last posted - I've been out since then, just got back).
I don't know if it's what I did (adding my name to the safe list), but if it
is - thanks!

Just to answer your questions below, in case it clarifies anything...

OK, there are no entries there.

No - at least, not yet - neither there, nor downloaded to windows mail.
There are now 7 entries in the orange Inbox, all spam, times beginning
around when I logged on (10 minutes ago). Many, many more than that have
come to my PC - receipt times beginning 12.45 - but this quantity is normal
for me! They go straight to my Deleted Items, and others go to Junk mail.

(OK, I see now that those in the orange inbox are awaiting download to my
windows mail... Sorry, I'm just cottoning on to pretty basic stuff here... )

I don't know. How do I set that?
And do I need to, now it's (fingers crossed...) working again?

If you log into your account on the web site>go to my settings>you can
enable the junk filter, this will catch most of the many Spam that you say
that you are getting to your PC, instead they will go to the server site
Junk folder.

Well the option allows you to receive all mail to both, PC's, without that
setting the first PC to poll for messages will clear the server.
Particularly useful if you use a Laptop, away from home.
The setting if you wish to use it is the same in OE & WM.
Tools>accounts>select account>properties>advanced tab.
If you decide to leave messages on the server, choose a sensible number of
days to delete them, to prevent your server mailbox from filling up. Set it
on both PC's.

It looks like the Orange server was having problems?
