not able to view thumbnails in files

I am unable to view thumbnails in my picture folder (or any other folder).
Does anyone know why this would happen. It started about 2 months ago, and
no matter what I've done, I am still unable to view them. The setting is
correct, but they are still showing as large icons.

Installing image software can do this.

I am able to view the preview in the preview pane, but the thumbnails aren't
showing as they are supposed to. Normally when you have the veiw set to
"thumbnail" you can see all of your pictures in the folder without having to
click on one to open it or preview it. For some reason or another, I am no
longer able to view them in this manner.

The link I gave you explains how to fiix this. It is because image software you installed removed the shellex key from the file types you are having trouble with or it changed their content-type.
