not able to use fast user switching

Mark Whalen

Hello,

When I choose logoff -> switch user it will display the "this computer is
locked and can only be unlock by......".

also when I choose logoff->logoff. it displays the logon box for me to type
in.

I would like the welcome user screen where I just have to click on my icon.

I have enabled fast user switching, I do not have a corrupt GINA, and I am
not in a domain. I can not find this problem anywhere in the newsgroups or
on support.ms.com or on google

any help is greatly appreciated

Hi,

I have a very similar problem on a brand new machine with a
fresh installation of Windows XP Pro. When I resume from a
password protected screen saver I get the same dialog box
("Only username or an administrator can unlock this
machine") even though I have enabled both the Welcome
Screen and Fast User Switching.

Unfortunately I do not have a solution, but like you I am
keen to know if anyone has come across this problem before
and has a solution to it.

I have another XP machine that works just fine, and I've
noticed that the message (next to the tick box) on the
Screen Saver tab of the Display Properties dialog box says
"On resume, display Welcome screen" whereas the new machine
says "On resume, password protect". The strange thing is
that both machines appear to be configured identically with
regard to the Welcome Screen and Fast User Switching.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to correct the
problem?

I think i may have figured it out. I have used style xp trial version and it
has expired. a registry key was changed to use that expired software and
that is why it wasnot working. so to fix
in regedit chnage the following key to logonui.exe
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion/Winlogon/
set UIhost to LogonUI.EXE

Let me know if it works!

Hi,

My registry already contains the setting you mentioned and
still it doesn't work. I have compared all the keys in that
branch of the registry and they are identical between the
working and non-working machines.

To add to my frustration I have noticed that the machine
will not enter hybernation mode either... the password
dialog seems to be preventing it. Manually selecting
hybernation works fine, but hybernation initiated by the
Power Options settings (or via my UPS) doesn't work once a
password protected screen saver has started.
