Not able to open any new window in IE6

IE6.0.2800-1106

IE is unable to open any new window, be it a javascript (eg. shortcut to
javascript:open_window (http://www.blahblahblah...) or an html window
(shortcut to http://www.blahblahblah...). The new window essentially opens
but stays empty and blank.

I am however able to get the page in question if I 'cancel the action' and
refresh the new window.

Thus far, I've tried to "repair IE", gone back to the previous install, done
all the java upgrades and I remain with this problem... there's more...

After re-install and repair I am left with another glitch with the edit/find
command... I get a "an error has occurred in this dialog" message. It is
"Error 35: Incompatible version of the RPC stub"

Any ideas? are they possibly connected?

I've experienced the same behavior in XP. I haven't
tried "repair"--but I'd be surprised if it worked since I
already tried "uninstalling" and reinstalling (although
I'm not sure it was a true uninstall). The only thing I
can think of that might have done this is that I had NIS
(Norton Internet Security) installed and then uninstalled
it.

The stop and refresh works for me as well. The thing is,
the address bar does not show the address until AFTER stop
has been clicked. Prior to that, the address bar is blank
but IE seems to be trying to find a site (animated icon in
upper right corner). I have no idea what's going on here
or how to fix it. Any help would be appreciated.

Before anyone asks, virus scans and at least four or five
of the most popular shredders, removers, etc. have already
been run. Still no luck.

How To: Fix "Error 35: Incompatible Version of the RPC Stub"

This error occurs when trying to use the "Find" function with Internet
Explorer. It is caused by a fault in v3.50.5041.0 OLEAUT32.DLL. Replace it
with an earlier version to fix the problem. Since it is a system file, you
will have to replace it using DOS. Copy the older version to C:\. Then go
to the start button and restart your computer in MS-DOS Mode. If you have
WindowsME, see below on how to do this.

Once in DOS Mode, type the following (no quotes): "copy C:\OLEAUT32.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\OLEAUT32.DLL". When asked if you want to overwrite, type
"Y". It will then say "1 file copied". Then restart your computer
(alt+ctrl+del or you can just load windows by typing "win" at the DOS
screen).

For Windows ME Users: To load WinME in DOS mode, copy "COMMAND.COM" and
"IO.sys" from "C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\EBD\" to a formatted floppy disk. Then
restart your computer with the floppy disk in the floppy drive and DOS will
boot.
