Norton uninstall breaks Windows Update

Like many other people running Windows XP SP2 I have had problems with
Windows Update hanging after listing the updates for download. This has
been identified as a problem with the Background Transfer Service (BITS)
not running. Trying to start BITS manually results in the specific-service
error 2147942402 (0x80070002). This is likely to arise if you have
uninstalled a Norton product such as NIS or NAV.

This solution worked for me:

RUN regsvr32 initpki.dll

Restart and try again.

I think I had the same problem. Got the list and clicked on Download, hard
disk activity but nothing else. I went directly to the Update site, got the
same list, clicked Install and everything worked just fine. Checked in
Add/Remove programs and the updates are there.
