Can someone help me, my partner has norton and norton protected bin, normally
everyday she has protected files in the bin, but suddenly no files are going
in there now. Is this right? It seems weird, as i get them all the time.

This is just another name for deleted files. If you haven't deleted any
files, then the bin will be empty.

Not completely accurate. Yes, the files in there are deleted files, but the
Norton Protected files were not deleted by the user, they were deleted by
other software...

I am experiencing the exact same problem on my laptop. Recently, the Norton
Protected Recycle bin has mysteriously stopped working. No files ever appear
in the Unerase Wizard, and the Empty Norton Protected Files popup menu option
on the Recycle Bin icon is always disabled / grey / grayed out. The only
files that ever show in the Unerase Wizard / All Protected Files display are
those that are in the regular, Windows Recycle Bin. And I thought that these
aren't supposed to show up anyway.

Attempts so far to fix have been:
Attempt 1) Disabled Norton Protection, Emptied Windows Recycle Bin, shelled
to DOS and removed C:\Recycler\Nprotect\*.*, C:\Recycler\Nprotect, and even
C:\Recycler
Result 1) No change.

Attempt 2) Started Add/Remove Programs, navigated to Norton SystemWorks,
chose Modify, unchecked Norton Protection and Antivirus (uninstalling these
components), rebooted, re-installed components via add/remove programs.
Result 2) No change

Attempt 3) Started Add/Remove Programs, navigated to Norton SystemWorks,
chose Remove, completely uninstalling all of SystemWorks. Then, rebooted,
reinstalled from CD.
Result 3) No change, except now I've lost any Norton preferences and
settings.

I'm fresh out of ideas. Have you had any luck diagnosing or fixing?

Answer for you, TigerClaws:

NSW 2006 - Norton Unerase broken by recent Symevent updates
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,17014169~mode=flat

Problem is with a SymEvnt update, most likely applied by automatic LiveUpdate.

Fixing requires a complete uninstall of SystemWorks, then reinstall, then
don't let LiveUpdate download the SymEvent update. You can optionally
manually upgrade to the most recent working version of the SymEvnt files
(12.0.3), which are newer than the version on the SystemWorks 2006 install CD.

SymEvnt 12.0.3 is available via FTP at:
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/symevnt/
(32-bit, XP version file is sevinst12.0.3.exe)

Before going blindly into something with nothing but an ftp address, I would
recommend first going to
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/files/symevnt/symevnt.html and then to the
next page,
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/docid/1998081213371213
and reading the information there. It also explains what you need and how
to easily install it if you want to try it.

It's best to know yourself what you're about to do to your system as opposed
to following, albeit I think correct in this case, links.

Don't be offended Bill; I just have this "thing" lately about people posting
"fixes" without giving a way to verify them. I've seen a couple lately (NOT
from you!) that were really horrendous advice.

Regards,

Pop`

Pop, no offense taken.

Your advice to follow directions provided directly on the 3rd party vendor's
web site would oridnarily be the safest and most effective means of effecting
an upgrade to a 3rd party software component.

But, and this is a big "but," following your advice to follow Symantec's
directions will install version 12.1.1.1 of the Symevent files, which is the
exact version of the software causing the error under discussion in the first
place.

Please don't be offended; I just have this "thing" lately about people
thinking the problem through before venturing their opinion on a topic.

It's the same fundamental approach that causes Symantec product development
wonks to release a "fix" that breaks their existing production release of a
product. Guess they were too busy getting it out the door to actually test
it first. Either that, or they are getting what they pay for, in their
development, QA, and release control staff.
