Norton Antivirus subscription

Phisherman

I know that Norton Antivirus 2007 will be released in October this
year. If I buy Norton Antivirus 2006 now which is basically a
12-month subscription will I get the NAV 2007 release in Oct as a free
download upgrade? If not, I will probably use Grisoft AVG until then.
TIA

Why not just use AVG anyway and save yourself any payment out?..

Hello,

Speaking from past personal experiences (and many others might agree), I would suggest you to stay
away from the Norton products. They cause more problems than they solve. If I were you, I would
stick with AVG products. I have done so for the past 5 years or so and have always had good
experiences.

These are my personal experiences though.

I asked Symantec the same question one or two years ago, their answer at
that time was NO!

I have several computers on my network and would like each one to have
a *different* antivirus. Can you share anything about Semantec's
policy?

Why not ask this question of Symantec instead of in a Microsoft group?

I would expect that you might not. You'll probably qualify for some
discount, but only Symantec can tell you if that discount will be 100% or
not.
If not, I will probably use Grisoft AVG until then.

I haven't personally encountered any significant problems with AVG. Seems
fine to me.

I have not had any bad experiences using NAV, not to say I won't in
the future. I already use AVG on one machine and it is a good
product, but I want to use NAV on another machine running WinXP. It's
all right to bash Norton products, I appreciate the suggestion, but
that wasn't my question. Can you tell me anything about Semantec's
upgrade policy when NAV 2007 is released? TIA

That would seem logical, trying to sort out all the mumble jumble to
get a simple answer is not as easy as you might think. Sometimes it
is easier to ask about (objective) personal experience.

I thought (maybe) buying a one-year NAV was like buying one year
support and any upgrades during that period would be included.

Symantec Policy is to produce a new improved product each year which
invariably cannot be patched or upgraded to any newer version.. this is a
money earning policy of Symantec and others..

I have four machines running 24/7, and a spare that runs for a while each
day purely for updates.. all run AVG without any problem.. I have no desire
and can see little point in running a different av program on each machine,
and certainly none that require an outlay of $50 or more when there is a
perfectly good free solution available..

I think NAV is probably the worst, most problem-laden anti-virus product
that exists. If I were in your shoes, I would simply dump it and switch to
another product. I personally use Avast, but I hear that AVG is also a good
choice.

But to answer your question, no, if you buy NAV 2006 now, you won't get the
new version for free.

Why not contact Symantec directly and ask them about their upgrade policy
when NAV 2007 is released?

To answer your question, no. The subscription is for the virus definitions
and program updates download via liveupdate, good for a year. The NAV 2007
will most likely include a one year liveupdate subscription from the time of
installation, as prior years versions did. You have to buy the program, not
part of the liveupdate subscription previously enlisted on a prior version
of NAV. Symantec may have a price break for recent versions of NAV
previously installed if you buy online.

No. You're buying a license to a version of the program plus updates (not
upgrades) and a subscription to the virus signatures.

Note the difference between updates and upgrades.

When the next version comes out, you may qualify for a discount but you'll
have to ask Symantec Sales.

Wholly concur. The number of friends who've used NAV and gone through
pergatory as a result is legion!
