norton antivirus slowing down system BIG TIME! help!

Norton Antivirus 2004 seems to be checking every file on my system,
all the time! And it's damn slow! I had 2002 previously, and just kept
getting updates. It didn't check files all the time though, only when
I was opening stuff. This new version seems to check every file every
time I open a window in Explorer or a page on IE. What settings can I
change to speed up my PC, yet keep myself relatively safe from
viruses?

Nav 2004 runs in a 25-35 Megabyte memory footprint. As other's
have pointed out, it does create a drag on system performance. All
Anti-Virus real-time scanners will slow down the PC. One thing you
can do is disable the logging features. Open Nav, Click Reports
Activity Log, Right click on each sub-log - Clear and then Disable
each category (If you don't care to log or monitor activity).
The six to eight services that Symantec runs (Nav & Nis) do take
up a good bit of resources. There are a number of "Leaner" and
sometimes free anti-virus programs available. Symantec is still a
good choice for the average XP user, but NAV is getting to be a
"Problem" application.

An option that I do is I go to my control
panel/administrative tools and select Services. Another
window will pop up and list all your current programs here
you can set the setting to MANUAL or Automaticby right
clicking and go to properties. don't forget to apply it
after you change it.

Can you recommend any one over the rest?
What are the best ones or one?

Please explain why you have it set that way.
