Try a online AV scan from

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

or

http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

or both.

You will have to allow Active X to install to run these but they will
remotley scan your system to ensure nothing nasty is on it. Norton is
very buggy and prone to all sorts of errors + its very difficult to
fix when it goes wrong which it has in your case. You can try the
standard Symantec advice to uninstall / re-install Norton to try and
clear your scan problem (after you have checked with the on-line
scanners) but don't be surprised if things get worse.

I would also advise you to get rid of Norton and put a decent AV /
Firewall in it.

For peace of mind, go here
http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/index.htmland look on the right for
"Things to do" Try it there and see if it hangs. If it still does check
their message board.

Curiosity question: Have you tried running the Norton Live Update
component of Antivirus before running your scans? Sometimes, Norton
will download application patches along with virus detection code.
I'd run Live Update, reboot, and run a new scan. If that fails, then I'd
review Symantec's web site. Too bad Symantec doesn't offer newsgroups
such as this one.

Anytime you mention Norton in this newsgroup, you'll find one or more
people ready to jump your case and strongly urge you to dump Norton.
I've been running Norton for years (now using Norton Internet Security 2005)
and haven't (Knock on wood!) had a single problem yet.

Have you tried running spyware detection software, too? It could be that
spyware is affecting your PC. I run a variety of anti-spyware apps, but my
favorite is Spyware Doctor. (It even detects the proverbial kitchen sink.)

Good luck!

Chas & Betsy, Symantec Support is a joke!

It says for any given problem "Uninstall / Re-install" Norton to fix
your problem. This is after giving a long list of pointless things to
check first. I spend half my life fixing Norton foul ups on Home &
Office PCs and I have never yet found anything on the support site
that is relevant. I can fix it mostly but not easilly and I always
advise ditching it altogether unless the customer insists on keeping
it even after I tell them the likely time / money involved.

Norton is too bloated, too complicated and hogs far too many resources
to run on an average home PC, this is the cause of most of its
problems it is so demanding of the processor / RAM anything
interrupting it can cause a total failure requiring a re-install to
fix. The only reason it is so common is they pre-load it in new PCs to
shift it + a huge marketing department coupled with inexperienced
users.

For newbies when its working its fine, not the best around but its OK
however the second it goes wrong the only worthwhile advice to give is
to ditch it. Nobody worth reading on this NG would advise the use of
NIS as a security solution if it was not actually pre-installed and
even then most would advise taking it out ASAP.

Norton do some pretty good products and the Corporate Security
Solutions are generally fairly good but the home securtiy stuff is
utter crap.

I have visited their message board and have always gotten an immediate
answer. Look for it on their webpage?

I've also used Norton/Symantec products for years. I've had very good luck
with it. It's not to say that I don't have an occasional problem but no
more than any other software I've used. I've always been able to solve the
problems easily. But anti-Norton opinions are very loud! While most
happy users just let them rant and rave.

Message board? Symantec? Well, I never... I've always tried to cope with
the silly Norton automated system. If they don't cover your issue, you're
out of luck. I'll check it out. Thanks.

If Norton can detect the Trojan it should not have allowed it to install to
begin with (odds that it is a brand new trojan are slim), I got rid of
Norton 2 years ago and my pc is better for it.
Use a better AV program. These two are rated the best (and I have never read
a post from anyone with a parasite that is using either one,not so with the
more well known ones like Norton).
http://www.eset.com/download/trial.htm
http://www.kaspersky.com/trials

You can try this for free and it should get rid of the trojan.
http://www.ewido.net/en/
Their is no need to uninstall Norton if you try Ewido they are compatable
with each other.

Good luck!

Betsy,

We must be looking at different Symantec web pages. Revisited the site tonight
and still couldn't find a reference to any message boards. Tried the usual
automated stuff and it gave me references to ancient versions but nothing about
the modern versions. I'd love to find the message boards. If you would, please
reply with a link to a Symantec web page that actually lists message boards as
a support option. I'd be grateful. Uncle Joe.
