I cannot speak specifically to your "trojan" but, in my experience,
different software finds different bad things. A virus (that can destroy
your computer) is different from a trojan (that may sit there quietly but
send out all sorts of information.) and it may take different software to
locate them both.

That is what many on this board recommend scanning with several different
products including anti-virus, anti-trojan, anti-adware,etc.

Though there can be some overlap, those two programs work differently
and can be looking for different things. No one anti-malware program
can do it all, nor can a single program that works on a specific type of
malware catch all malware of that type. You need to run a combination
of programs. Scans should be done in safe mode. It's also a good idea
to have a second AV program installed, but not running in memory, in
addition to norton. Do an occasional scan with that second AV program.
There are also online scanning services to use from time to time. See

They presumably use different databases based on the information that they
have collected.

You are updated with regular information, I believe, from these different
suppliers and clearly they are only as good as their sources.

If it was that easy to spot we wouldn't need software and we could do it
ourselves.

As with any software no doubt different spyware will I imagine be better for
different things. I would also imagine that there are reviews of each and
others on the Internet.

I have just been recommended to a freeware by someone in another group. It
seemed to take 10 minutes to scan 5,000 files. I have 250,000 files. My
normal one (McAfee) scanned that in about an hour.

Also I tried to contact this other supplier. For freeware they don't provide
any support which is not much good. It is OK if you are a techie, but I am
not.

I personally use the following:

Symantec Corporate Edition for Workstations and Servers 10.1
Spybot Search and Destroy (from safer-networking.net)
AdAware from lavasoft
Multi-AV from David Lipman

A full virus scan, of more than 400,000 files on my workstation, takes
hours and time doesn't matter, as I can after hours when needed. I
always do these type of FULL scans in safe mode.

What freeware did they suggest you use, I hope it wasn't AVG, it has a
terrible detection rate on new malware.

One consideration to ponder is that modern trojans will
'pick off' the installed AntiVirus, such as norton, right
off, making them useless. The malware makers have gotten
clever these days.

It is always good to have third party scanners, and backup
installers for them available. When one suspects a Trojan or
other malware, simply install the third party tool and use
alongside the registered AV ware. When done remove the
backup third party tool, so the system reverts to the
registered av, and any other malware infestations cannot
detect the third party and try to destroy it either.

In Romans 1 there are qualities of Unregenerate man listed
which describe him in the last days.
Is your quality found on this list??

Fact Attack

I've had several viruses and I've never had an anti-virus program
find shit, none of the new ones anyways, 10 years ago, Norton removed
a boot sector virus, for which I was greatful, but none of them have
been able to do shit ever since.

I removed them myself by finding them and deleting them, in 1/10 of
the time it takes to uninstall Norton Anti-Virus.

Also, this ****ing mcafee shit uninstalls terrible and leaves tons of
crap in your registry and strewn about your file system, what a
disaster XP is.

Yes, it was!

I had to go out and leave my machine on with the scan running it was taking
so long, and there was no report that I could discern when I came back.

In the last few days I have had problems with McAfee SecurityCenter. I
noticed that when I sent emails or posted to newsgroups I was getting an
error message which would normally indicate that the message wasn't been
sent, but it wasn't remaining in the Outbox - indeed it was being sent.

I had been recommended to switch off Email scanning of viruses which I had
previously done.

When I checked whether it had started scanning these I found that
SecurityCenter gave a blank screen.

I contacted McAfee and I was IMing with them for about 20 mins with an
adviser giving me instructions as to how to rectify the situation. It (ie
the screen) hasn't changed, although when it found a potential virus earlier
on it didn't invite me to scan all my files, which suggests that
SecurityCenter is working but there is something wrong with the interface.

How do you find them? I have 250,000 files on my HD.

Do you then need to reinstall the registered AV ware?

Thanks

I have just had to remove and reinstall my McAfee suite which was quite a
palaver - as advised by their online Help.
