I upgraded from win-me to xp-home. I can't reload norton
anti virus I get a message saying that a program is
running their is not a Norton or symantec program listed
at the install/uninstall sec. I also downloaded a "fix"
from symantec. It did not work. I tried installing a new
Mcafee 2004, but I get the same warning that Norton is
installed, so it won't install Mcafee either, PLease

Did you uninstall Norton BEFORE the upgrade to XP? If not, then you will
have a tough time fixing things. Norton, and some other programs, load
different routines depending on the operating system. What is left over
from ME is probably wrong for XP, and uninstalling from the add/remove
programs control panel probably won't work either.

What you need to do is to manually uninstall all of Norton. Check the
Norton support site for details. Try a search on "uninstal" or similar.
This will likely involve some registry editting and a lot of deletion of
specific files.

Once the PC is cleaned of Norton, reboot, then try the install.

Symantec even supplies a program which will manually remove the munged-up
vestiges of Norton left over from your old operating system.

I had the same problem and I understalled before upgrading.
Tried everthing. Uninstall, reinstall, clean registry, Symantec program etc.
I always ended up with an Antivirus that wouldn't work.

Gave up after days of wasted effort. Bought Panda Titanium.

It seems to have less load on the PC. I am now happy and will not go back to
Norton
