Norton and XP problem

X

xp user in need

hi,
I had to reinstall xp and all my programs. Before
reactivating my ADSL connection I installed Norton
Antivirus 2004. Then I tried to get the windowsupdates
and while doing so, I must have been hit by a bug I was
not protected against.
Norton doesn't load its autoprotect anymore and cannot
open anymore. If I press CTRL+ALT+DEL, the same happens:
opens and closes very quickly.

some notes:
*When I just had the problem the pc didn't load xp
properly (didn't show icons or anything, only desktop
image): I had to press ctrl+alt+del (norton and this
worked here) and cancel a process called 'wuaucl.exe'.
Then I got my icons , start button, etc back.

*When I got this back , my ctrl+alt+del and norton DIDN'T
work anymore! I had this multiple times. Till I scanned
with norton while i didn't have icons yet, deleted some
infected files, and since then xp loads all the way, but
i can still not open norton and all...

*By now I have installed all the windowsupdates, (not the
servicepack 2, it's not in the list of updates so I first
have to clean my pc of spyware and viruses) and the
problem still occurs.

*I have an updated norton 2004 and the newest ad-aware

Will servicepack 2 solve this? (I could download it, but
didn't do that yet because I don't want to screw my pc up
more)

I hope somebody can help me

It's really the firewall that you most needed before
going on-line.

I wouldn't expect it to fix an already messed up system
(it could even get worse.) However, if you mean a
reinstall and re-application of SP2 (already downloaded
or on CD) all before connecting, that should work because
it starts a firewall by default.
