Norton 2005 / 2003 IDS Problems?

N

newhorizon

I have Norton AV 2005 combined with Norton Personal Firewall 2003.

I Know, I Know..............................Norton is rubbish and
thats most of the problem however its easy, convenient and familiar to
my work colleagues who are pretty much pooter useless so I am not
going to foist anything else on them yet.

I use the above combination because when I installed the full NIS 2005
it caused horrendous problems, took down my network and made a total
mess, this was almost entirely due to the firewall, the AV was ok.

However I have noticed that in the firewall options > Internet
Security > live update > Monitor for Updates to Intrusion Detection
the select box can be enabled but disables itself as soon as the OK
button is pressed, so I assume the IDS function is not updating and
nut protecting the computers.

Norton help do have a bit on this particular problem but it only
applies to NIS 2005 and has the usual crap about install the latest
live updates (well duuuuuuuuur) and if the problem persists uninstall
/ reinstall NIS (which is not going to happen) as I am not putting NIS
2005 in again + it never works anyway. I have the latest version of
live update installed and everything else seems hunky dory.

Also the network is behind a hardware firewall.

So the question is does anybody know anything about this IDS problem
and should I be worried about it?

TIA

Stop right there. As far as the AV side is concerned, after a *long* time
of evaluating every single variable I could imagine and tallying it all up,
I settled on using norton myself, as many have. Norton SystemWorks 2003, to
be exact.

Is the norton firewall particularly bad?

No its not 2003 is / was very good its just dated IMO, but the 2005
version caused mayhem for me.snip

Sorry Thomas I have been a bit busy to reply for a few days,

I have used Norton for years with no problems.

2003 was fine and I have been using it from Sept 2002 to Sept 2004
(still got the invoices) at which point I decided it was probably time
to upgrade. Trusting Norton I bought several copies of NIS 2005 having
no reason to suspect that there would be problems.

DOH...............................

Live update didn't, the 2005 firewall took down my network computers
and refused to allow FTP clients at all + cut off numerous other
applications. The Firewall ignored any attempt to modify its control,
ie I could not tweak it to get things working. Disabling it was the
only way to get full access back. Therefore uninstalled it and
re-installed 2003 Firewall alongside Norton AV 2005.

2003 Firewall is fine I just think it is dated.

AV 2005 after a few days disabled and refused to re-enable. Nortons
help pages revealed AV 2005 had issues with Creative Audigy Soundcards
and the "fix" was amongst other crap to re-install which does not
work.

One of the most popular sound cards in the world and Norton AV 2005 "
can have issues" with it...........unbelieveable! Magazine reviewers
did not mention that one AFAIK

I think Symantec stuff is no longer reliable it has gone into a steep
decline since 2003. Symantec don't seem to care.

I am still using 2003 firewall but I have F Protect AV, NOD 32 &
Kaspersky Pro on trial for AV solutions, I am probably going for F
Protect.
