I have an instance where the normal.dot file gets overwritten during an upgrade from Office XP to Office 2003. This has had the affect of losing all of the macros and customizations that were in Word XP.

Is this the norm? Or is there a way that we can prevent this from happening?

This is *not* the norm if you install an upgrade over an existing version (I
upgraded from Office XP to 2003 with no such problem). Unfortunately, I'm
not knowledgeable enough to suggest why this is happening for you or how you
can prevent it. At worst, you can back up Normal.dot (and your other
customizations; see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/FilesToBackup.htm)
before installing.

It isn't the norm but doesn't surprise me. This is only a small reason for
keeping most customizations elsewhere. See
http://addbalance.com/word/movetotemplate.htm for step-by-step instructions
on moving / sharing / copying customizations including AutoText,
AutoCorrect, keyboard assignments, macros, etc.

Hi David,

It could be that the User Templates folder was modified and a new Normal.dot template created.

Have you preformed a search for Normal.dot? It could be you have more than one available.
