Non responding programs

During the last month or so I am getting a lot of
programs crashing with the non responding message on the
screen. I am at a lost as to where to look- hard disk or
memory issue ?

Can anybody help ?

I am anything but knowledgeable altho I would start with a virus scan of yr
entire system. My Norton intercepted (it claimed) and deleted it claimed a
'Trojan download virus', and almost everything still runs o.k. but the Disk
cleanup utility doesn't work correctly anymore, nor does System Restore work
