Non-responding CD and DVD drives under W2k

I have been having a problem with CD and DVD drives under W2k not recognizing
that a CD/DVD disc has been put into the drive.

The sequence is I boot up and get the normal Windows desk top. I insert
either a DVD or CD into the appropriate drive and nothing, in explorer the
drives appear empty, if I click on either I get the 'Insert disc' message.

Howver if I then shut down the computer and re-boot with the disc/s inserted
both drive work correctly.

If I then eject the discs and re-insert them they fail to be recognized.

This has occurred on two completely different computers and the latest one
is brand new less than a month old.

Can anyone suggest a possible cause of this behaviour please?

Are you using original CD's/DVD's?

Some DVD player don't recognise CD-R/DVD-R's

If you're using original discs & the problem still occurs then right-click
MY COMPUTER, choose PROPERTIES, click the HARDWARE tab, & then click DEVIVE
MANAGER (button half-way down the right on the HARDWARE tab)

Are there any conflicts showing up under the CD/DVD drives? Double click
each one & see if they are working properly.

Please post your findings & let me know as soon as you can & I will then try
to help you further

I am having the same problem. Under the device manager, there is a conflict
symbol (!) and it states that it's unable to install the drivers for these
devices due to a confkict somewhere. There are no other conflicts listed
within the device manager. I have attempted to uninstall and reinstall both
drives multiple times to no avail, have run a complete chkdsk, etc. I'm at a
loss as both drives have worked perfectly up until 2 days ago. Any help that
anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
