Non-existent Program Not Responding

B

Bill Schmitt

Last night, when I shut down my computer, I received a pop up message
that RVSELECT0185B2A8 was not responding. Before telling XP (Home) to
end it, I decided to find out what it was. Task Manager doesn't show
it, so I tried Process Explorer from sysinternals, started it before
shutting down the machine, and then shutdown. The same process was not
responding and it was not listed in Process Explorer. I searched for
it on my hard drive (both a windows search and a command line search
with dir /s from C:) and can't find it there either. Any suggestions
on how to track this one down would be appreciated.

Sounds like a virus or malware.

When a window pops up at shutdown telling you that such and such is not
responding, normally it is telling you a Window Handle name or something.
It does not normally mean that the name is a process name. Process Explorer
cannot help unless you know the process that this window handle is in.

Did you look in Event Viewer for any messages?

I don't see anything unexpected in the log. There was one crash in the
browser noted, so I suppose it could have been something there. I have
Norton Security running, along with Norton Antivirus. I also checked
the system with both Spybot S+D and Lavasoft Adaware, which found a
few negligable cookies, nothing more.

Since this is a String, you could do a global search on all files (*.*) and
search for text RVSELECT. Don't add the remaining because that looks like
an sequencing ID ... unless each time theat message appears ... it is
always the same. Regardless, RVSELECT would get everyone.
