iexplore.exe shutdown problems

When I try to shutdown, a error window pops up saying that iexplore.exe is
not responding. I cannot get it to respond and so I select "end now",
whereupon it shuts down. I did a search and found 3 iexplore.exe files on my
C drive. Any ideas?

This is normally symptomatic of virus/malware infection. Go through
these general malware removal steps systematically -

Include scanning with either Sysclean or Multi_AV, plus Ewido. Do all
prep/finishing work and follow instructions to do all scans in Safe
Mode.

When all else fails, run HijackThis and post your log in one of the
specialty forums listed at the link above (not here, please).

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help

No, you don't. You have the choice of saying - this isn't my thing - and
taking the machine to a pro. I'm not trying to discourage you from
doing it yourself. If you take it easy and follow David's and my
instructions, you'll be fine. I'm just reminding you that there is an
alternative to doing it yourself. Just the other day I needed to
replace a thermostat so I pulled out the Home Repair book. After I read
the how-to and had a lie-down with my head swimming, I called the
heating/air conditioning guy.

Either way, we're here if you need more help. :)

I printed out the excellent instructions from the link on the website you
gave me. Followed the instructions and got through it. It took about 3-4
hours and Kasperskey reported 3 problems that were deleted/cleaned.

I got an warning message when I shut down that referenced
KERNAL_APC_PENDING_DURING_EXIT, but went on to reboot. I did 2 more reboots
to check for the original problem. On one reboot the problem appeared and on
another it did not.

Other than the annoyance, there does not seem to be any bad things happening
because of the problem. I was afraid that the symptom would lead to
something bigger.

I still am not clear on why I had/have 3 copies of the iexplore.exe file, in
3 different locations on my computer. Perhaps it is a non-issue.

Anyway, I am operating fine with the exception of some uncharacteristic
pauses and delays in the loading of some programs.

I really appreciate your help. Thanks a lot.

I have no idea and most of us wouldn't see the rating anyway. You are
using the web interface, which is awful. I don't think any of the
regular helpers use it; we all use real newsreaders because this is
Usenet and newsreaders work best on Usenet. I'll give you my standard
cut/paste regarding that. Setting up a newsreader is extremely easy to
do and you'll get more out of this valuable resource.

Before I do, I wanted to address your question about iexplore.exe.
Please post back with the full path to each of those three files. For
example: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe.
