Noises from nowhere

After installing XP2 my computer now makes noises out of the blue. It sounds
like a pop-up block noise but I have that sound turned off. The computer
also stops for about a second when it happens. I leave my system on at night
and the noise will awaken me. Can someone tell me what this is all about?

It happens with IE and with any other program I happen to be in. It happened
yesterday with excel.
