No volume - No sound - XPSPK2 - Not a single luxury

I have windows xp pro spk2 on my pc (yea I know). Have been using pro
for awhile everything (strangely enough) worked find then several days
ago I lost my sound completely. I went into control panel and went to
into "sound and audio devices" under the volume tab VOLUME DEVICE was
greyed out.
I went into device manager there was no yellow question marks anywhere.
I
even saw my sound card device installed. I double clicked to see if
there is
any IRQ or COM conflicts and there was none. Have been through the lot
formatted, reinstalled, uninstalled, reinstalled, tryed for update
drivers (oh by the by sounds an on board Realtek ac97, board ASUS
P5S800-vm) one reinstallation came back as no device installed, first
ever installation every thing worked, but this time there seems to be
some things missing from the installation such as the sound effects,
went to realtek site but not much luck, have tried updating driver,
installed with and with windows help, checked out the web forums
ect, ect. Have been through and through the system, nine out of ten
times I can fix the problems associated with pc`s but this ones a
beauty, what I now require is a clear head and a lot of help from some
one that knows how to resolve this issue or the pc could go on the next
boat trip as an anchor.
I have even considered that an update as cause but now have formatted
and reinstalled and problem still there tried different speakers. All
suggestions (well almost) would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks to
all..Col

Do you mean Device Volume under the Volume tab?
What shows as the Default Device under the Audio tab?
What devices are listed under the Hardware tab?

Create a new folder on your desktop.
Go to: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
Under General download on the right select: Motherboard > Socket 775 > P5S800-VM > Search button.
Download and extract v3.66 (24.17MB file) to the newly created folder. If you're feeling froggy enough to try a Beta version, it's on you if something whacks out.
Read the included Readme.txt file for removal/installation.
Boot to Safe Mode and in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any software/firmware related to your sound device.
In Device Manager remove any/all devices listed under Sound, Video and Game Controllers related to your sound Device.
Reboot and click Cancel twice if Windows detects the device.
Run setup.exe in the folder where the files were extracted.
