No Video Adapter - VgaSave instead? What do I do?

I just completed loading XP Pro on a new hard drive and I'm not able to load
the drivers for my ATI 9800 video card. After the completion of loading XP,
there was no adapter listed in the device manager. So I went to display
properties and navigated my way to the adapter tab and absolutely nothing is
listed. Under "Adapter Type" I clicked the advanced tab. The "general tab"
lists VgaSave and the device type is listed as Non-plug and Play drivers.
And finally the driver tab, under service name it says VgaSave and under the
display name it says VGA Display Controller. Finally in the startup area the
type is listed as "system".

The only information I've found regarding this is that it is a windows
display service. I found out real quick that if I stop it or disable it in
anyway I loose my display and end up with a black screen.....and you guessed
it......the only way I could get that display back was to reload XP.

The software that came with my graphics card will not load because of this
service. Can anyone please help??

Many thanks in advance, Rob

Since you can see something on the monitor, some sort of video is
working. Is this possibly a machine that has onboard video and you
upgraded to a standalone card? Are you sure you've got the monitor
plugged into the right connection?

Not trying to hurt your feelings, just suggesting a checkpoint.

Otherwise, shut down the computer and reseat the card. Make sure you've
attached any extra power supply connectors if the card needs them.
