Display adapter missing

I had to do a repair install on Win XP, and now there is
no display adapter listed in the device manager. I have
installed the drivers for my video card, and set my
resolution, but I can't figure out how to get the display
adapter icon back. There is no information in the
adapter type box, and adapter information for each entry
says "unavailable." The monitor tab lists "default
monitor" and under monitor settings, the screen refresh
rate says "use hardware default setting" and there are no
other choices. The adapter type properties general tab
says VgaSave, non plug and play drivers, and the driver
tab just saves VgaSave. Could you tell me how to get th
display adapter back? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Are you sure that you installed a Windows XP compatible driver for your
display adapter correctly? Go to the site of the maker and download the
latest Windows XP compatible driver, and install as directed.

I hadn't even installed any drivers after the repair
install, and had no display adapter on reboot. I went
online and downloaded the latest Win XP drivers and
installed them, but it didn't help. I build and repair
computers, so I know the drivers are correct, even though
they weren't installed when this problem occurred. Any
suggestions?

In a run of MSConfig, Boot.ini page, select /BASEVIDEO

Then reboot, using basic drivers. Look in Add/remove Programs to see if
the drivers you installed are listed - if so, uninstall them. Once
things are clean, install the download you got (and remove the basevideo
setting before any reboot)
