No updates from microsoft

I recently had my computer's mircosoft windows program reinstalled by a local
computer repair shop. Now i cant get updates. I used the software sent with
my computer for reinstalling. I keep getting messages that this version is
not genuine. The product key is not valid. The product key is on the side of
my computer. Do I need to take it back to the shop or can I fix the problem
myself?

That's strange, because from what i understood is that microsoft would
provide updates irregardless of the genuine status. Eventually, windows
would stop working all together if it was not activated or made genuine. But
the updates was exempt.

There is lots of info on the net on how to make your copy genuine. Off the
top of my head there is a freeware program called JellyBean that works with
product keys.... Be careful of others, so be sure to "read user comments".
Some may be trojans indisguised....

Do some further research regarding product keys over the net. First
research at microsoft.com since this would be your first source to fix this
problem. Afterwards, do a search on this newsgroup by using the search
window and pulling up prior postings on similar problems and solutions like
yours..... Beyond the recommendations you find herein, be careful of other
softwares that make false claims....

I downloaded the keyfinder from Jelly Bean and the CD code it revealed is
different than the one on the side of my computer( the stick on rom the
vendor ) Should I enter the Old product key and see if that will fix it? If
i do will this really screw things up? Help.. Milly
