I'm in the process of trying another clean install. In addition to the error "Web page has an unexpected error or cannot display the page that was requested" I can not register XP, when I try to do this the registration script tells me it can not connect to the Microsoft Server. I think these are releated, but I have not encountered this problem before. Other problems: that may shed a clue is that there 7 unknows in the device manager, the Raid Cntroler driver causes the system to freeze and the USB drive installation for this board is not clear (there is a warning from the MB driver setup that if it is not done properly you will have to reinstall Windows to get the USB 2 to work)
I'm doing a third clean install after erasing both 180 G WD drives and formating normally.
Thanks for your comments and any futher insight.

What is the exact error?
Try the Windows Update Checklist:

Since the computer is new, perhaps another try at a Clean Installation
is best:
Clean Installation
Disconnect all peripherals (camera, printer, scanner, etc)
Disconnect network/modem cable.
Go to BIOS and set CDROM as boot device before hard drive.
Insert Windows XP CD and reboot.
At "Press any key to boot to CDROM" quickly press a key and follow the
prompts for a Clean installation:

If you are installing using Windows XP Upgrade, insert qualifying
media in Step 4b.
Delete all partitions in step 5 if you desire to erase all data on the
hard drive.
Partitioning and formatting will be done automatically.
All data will be destroyed, back-up important data first.
Enable or install firewall BEFORE connecting network cable.

Install ALL Critical Windows Updates:
Start/All Programs/Windows Update
After you are finished, you will need to load the appropriate drivers.
If your computer was shipped with Windows XP, these procedures may or
may not apply.
Check your manual or contact the computer manufacturer for more
details.
