NO START UP SOUND

I am experiencing no sound for Windows XP only on various
segments.

For example I do not receive sounds on the following:
Windows Start Up
Windows Logoff
Windows Logon
I have checked these midi files within the Sounds & Audio
Devices section of Control Panel
and the sounds actually do play.

I have also double checked to ensure my 'Theme Settings'
are correct and that the above problem sounds
(Start Up Windows, Windows Logoff and Windows Logon) have
all been selected.

Any advice or assistance would be very much appreciated.
