For the past two days, we've been unable to get a start menu to show up on
the desktop. We've restarted, rebooted, searched, and have had no luck.
Please advise!

Possibly this from MVP Ramesh will help:

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/AllPrograms.htm - Start Menu 'All Programs' is
empty or nothing happens when you click the menu

If this doesn't help or is not quite your problem, you might try a
System Restore to when things worked.

It is unclear to me whether your All Programs doesn't work or whether
nothing happens when you click on the Start button. Since you would
normally use the Start button>Start Menu to run System Restore, if you
can't do this then right-click on an empty area of the Taskbar and
choose Task Manager. When you have the Task Manager up, on the
Applications tab you'll see a button that says "New Task". Click on it
and type:

rstrui.exe [enter]

You may need the full path, which is:

c:\Windows\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

This should start the System Restore program. Select "Restore my
computer to an earlier time".

And as always, you should ask yourself The First Question Of
Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things worked and the
time they didn't?

Thanks for the advise. The problem was that I had no start button in the
lower left corner of the monitor, so no start menu, no anything. I went to my
computer and then control panel, did some clicking, and it showed up again.
Go figure.

Sounds like you had the display settings set too large. That's only a
guess on my part, of course. Whatever the reason, I'm glad things are
working for you now.
