I know it sounds stupid (and believe me I'm not trying to insult your
intelligence), but re-check the small things. I once went without sound for
almost 3 weeks, and was on the verge of buying a new sound card when my
little brother got on to play a game and turned my sound back on. I had it
muted on the system tray all along.
Things like having speakers turned off(or broken), the volume all the
way down, a cord unplugged, and sound muted on the system tray have stumped
many a tech looking for driver problems and fried PCI cards.
