no sound with any audio player

I have XP Home. I am suddenly not able to get any sound using any of the
audio programs (Windows Media Player, Music Match Jukebox, RealPlayer, etc.).
The music file loads and the control panel for the player shows that it's
playing, but there is no sound. All wires are connected properly. I tried
restarting the computer but that didn't help. What setting has gone awry??

No that didn't fix it. The volume was on and the mute was off. Everything
is connected, and audio drivers appear to be enabled.
