Volume problems - CD player works, media player doesn't

For some reason i can't get any sound to play from my computer. The cd
player plays music fine, but for any other sounds from my computer (which it
always uses media player for), there doesn't seem to be any sound.

For example, when i play media player, the music player works fine but there
just isn't any noise coming out the speakers. I have looked at all the
volume and audio settings in my control panel and it hasn't changed anything.

I have also downloaded the latest version of media player but there still is
the problem, and i tried to reinstall certain features from my windows xp
disk but it still doesn't work.

I'm wondering whether there may be a missing system file or something. Can
anybody help me?
