No sound/ sound file playability

my computer has suddenly stopped playing any sounds and
if i try to play sounds through the media player, it
gives me an error saying that my sound device could be
malfunctioning. I have the most recent version of WMP and
have had this computer for 2-3 years and have previously
had no sound problems. what should I do (the XP
troublshooter steps don't seem to work)?

sidenote: my computer's plug accidentally got pulled out
a day or two ago, could this have messed up the BIOS or
the sound device/driver/card in any way?

This happened to me a few month .

I uninstalled quicktime player and it took some reg
entries with it .
My sound went and I got an error when I tried to play
DVD's.
The drivers would not reinstall so the only option was to
reformat and reinstall XP.
I have since found out that there is a backup program
hidden on the XP disc which puts a shadow copy of your
system in a file which overwrites your system back to a
previous state.
It seems to work better than system restore.
