no sound on my computer

hey peeps can you help me PLZ! well i accidently deleted a via something
something thingy, I SUPPOSE that would be my sound device and when my
computer restarted i had no more sound! when i tried playing a song it
says...

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with
your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your
computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be
functioning properly."

Start
Settings
Control Panel
Click "Classic View" if not already enabled
Open Sounds applet
Click Audio tab
Top-most drop down? What's listed in the selection box?

If there's your sound card then select it. If it's not there to be able to
be selected check the drivers to ensure they're installed properly and not
corrupted.
