because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound
device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or
it might not be functioning properly."

can anyone help?

Has this eMachine ever worked properly before? Have you installed
something, like a new program recently? Are you getting any system
sounds, like beeps?

I have deleted some files to free up disk space, done disk clean up and
deleted some cookies. I got the sound working by going to system restore in
the app menu but now the internet is really slow. i think I got rid of
something important for the internet. I have an external stand alone modem
dsl and it works fine. Some graphics don't work and it is creep slow. Can you
help? One person told me to press F11 to do a system restart to wipe
everything and start over. Is this plausable? Please help me I work at home
and have no one to help me out. THANKS!!!!

I've never heard of F11 doing anything (see below). You stated that
you did a System Restore, how far back did you go? You can go back
up to 90 days. You may want to try a restore point further back. Also,
you can try SFC (System File Check) which checks for missing or
corrupt system files and replaces them.
Start>Run>type SFC /SCANNOW (space between the C and /) and
click OK. Have your WindowsXP CD handy for it may ask for it.

Functions of the F11 key
If you press this key, you will enter the ‘Full Screen’ mode in IE. This
mode is otherwise called ‘KIOSK’ mode.
In MS Word, if you press this key you will go to the next field.
SHIFT + F11 = Go to the previous field.
CTRL + F11 = Lock a field
CTRL + SHIFT + F11 = Unlock a field
ALT + F11 = Display Microsoft Visual Basic Code.
ALT + SHIFT + F11 = Display Microsoft Visual Studio Code.

I have the same error message as luckie when I try to play music from a
website. The computer used to play music, but one day when I came in to work
it just wouldn't anymore, I've exhausted the Troubleshooter. We have
automatic overnight updates so I don't know what was installed. I DO get
system beeps from my speakers.
Please help; I'm ready to stick a spoon in my eye if I can't listen to music
here.

I get the same exact error message as luckie when I try to play music. I've
been trying to play music from online radio stations. The computer used to
play music fine; one day I came into work and it just didn't work anymore. We
have automatic updates, so I don't know what was installed. I DO get system
beeps. And I have exhausted the Troubleshooter. I can't get it to think it
has a sound device. But the sound device didn't go anywhere! I haven't
changed anything since it played before! What's going on?
Please help; I'm going to stick a spoon in my eye if I can't listen to music
at work.
