No sound since reinstalling Windows 2000 Professional

I can not get sound on my computer since reinstalling
Windows 2000. I have an icon for sound on my taskbar
but I can not get sound to work. In Device Manager under
sound it shows:Audio Codecs, Creative SB Live Basic (WDM),
Game Port for Creative SB Live!, Legacy Audio Drivers,
Legacy Video Capture Devices, Media Control Devices and
Video Codecs. It says all of them are working properly.
Sound is set for Window Default.
What are the steps that I need to take to get sound
working?

;o)

did you check the soundsettings in controlpanel? sounds and multimedia?

Yes I checked all that and it seems okay to me. It is set
as window default

but that has nothing to do with the sound itself, check the audio tab -
the next one.
the sound might be muted there.

Hello.

Start
Help
"type" audio driver installation
you will be in a trouble shooter for audio

You also can check to make sure that the audio lug is plugged into the
correct outlet on the audio card.
If your speakers are powered make sure the light (led) in lit.

If you go through the trouble shooter and have no sound, I suggest you go
into the Device manager and Remove the Audio.

The way you do this is as follows:
Start
Settings
Control Panel
Computer Management
Device Manager
Find Sound Card, and click the plus
Try right clicking on the Sound card to check for new hardware
You also can right click on the drop down item and do the same thing.

"No Joy"
I you know how to remove the sound card, next remove it, start it up
without the sound card.
Shut it down, replace the card, and let the computer find the sound card
again.

You should have sound then.
If you don't, reinstall the sound drivers. You can get them off the
manufacturer's website.
Install them again and then see if you have sound.

If you installed Win2K Critical Update #835732, remove it, reboot, and see
what happens. If no joy, just go back to Windows Update and reinstall it.

It worked for me. But I had to remove something like 2 dozen updates one at
a time until I found it.

I usually will remove the devices that I can remove/uninstall and re-boot.
W2K PnP will discover and re-install the devices. If that doesn't work, try
downloading the latest drivers from the manufacturer's site....
