No sound schemes

I am having a problem with my sound schemes. The schemes are at the right
location but I cannot sample them. I click to set them, but the play button
does not light up so I can sample them. My windows media player works fine, I
can play music cd's listen to internet radio. I have also noticed that the
sound recorder does not work anymore as well.

reinstall the drivers for your sound card

Drivers have been re-installed. Problem still exists. I originally though the
sound card was bad. The problem occurred before I installed the new sound
card.

My problem is that the Windows XP sounds don't run. The music or wav files
sound properly using for example Media Player but sound of the system, for
example the messenger sounds don't play. On the system sounds configuration I
cannot sample the sounds because the play button is not lit up. The files are
there and they will open with Media Player.
