No Sound although hardware detected.

Running XP Pro and the sound was working fine, all of a
sudden the sound stopped working.

Device manager reports the AC 97 Sound Card as being there
and fully working, it even allowed me to update the
drivers Via Windows Update and the manufactures Web Site.
Under The Audio Tab in Sound & Multimedia Properties for
audio playback or sound recording it states no hardware
present, the drivers have been removed and reinstalled but
no luck, every single MS Critical Update has been
installed too.

HELP!!.
