no security tab

I have a computer running XP professional SP3. When I right-click on a
harddisk and select properties, I do not see the security tab. How do I
make it appear so I can assign ownership and grant permission for
access? Thanks.

PS: I do see the security tab if I access the shared drive from another
computer running XP professional SP2.

Few clarification questions/comments:

- Is simple file sharing turned off?
- Windows Explorer, go to Tools, Folder Options, View and uncheck Use
Simple File Sharing

- How is this 'shared drive' (not mentioned as such until the second part of
your posting, just as a 'harddisk' originally) actually being shared and
mapped?

- What is the *actual* file system on the 'shared drive' itself?

- Click on the Start button, select "RUN" and type in "winver" and click
OK - what does the picture at the top of the new window say and what version
(whole line) say? (Both machines you have mentioned so far, please.)

- When you are logged into the Windows XP SP3 machine - is it as an
administrative level user?

- Do the results from the Windows XP SP3 machine remain the same no matter
what user account is logged in?

- Where were the majority of files/directories on the 'shared drive'
originally created from (the machine with SP2 or the machine that now has
SP3?)

- Since you seem to think SP3 might be relevant - what happens when you
remove it?

- If you create a new folder/file on the 'shared drive' from the Windows XP
SP3 machine - can you edit its security?

- Do you see the security tab on any folders from the SP3 machine (local
drives formatted with NTFS, etc...?)

I'd bet on you finding the problem/solution above - but I hope you come back
and let everyone know either way. ;-)
